Permit for improvements to Locomotion Plaza submitted!

by Mike Van Houten / Aug 6, 2024

A construction permit to drastically improve Locomotion Plaza in downtown Reno has been submitted.

The permit reads

COMMERCIAL NEW CONSTRUCTION. THIS PROJECT INCLUDES THE CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE FOOTINGS TO ANCHOR SIX (6) NEW PREFABRICATED SHIPPING CONTAINERS. TWO CONTAINERS USED AS BARS. TWO CONTAINERS USED FOR STORAGE. ONE CONTAINER USED FOR STORAGE AND A DJ MUSIC SPACE WHEN PROGRAMMED. ONE CONTAINER USED FOR ADA ACCESSIBLE RETAIL SPACE. NEW ELECTRICAL SERVICES INCLUDE A 225A PANELBOARD ON THE NORTHWEST CORNER OR SIERRA AND 3RD ST. NEW POWER PEDESTALS PLACED ALONG THE NORTH AND SOUTH EDGES OF LOCOMOTION PLAZA TO PROVIDE SERVICE FOR PLAZA FUNCTIONS.

So I'm guessing this will be in the style of the Eddy. I reported a while back the first phase of this project and plans for it, which is already funded, plus future unfunded phases. You can check out the images below.

Locomotion Plaza 2.0 - Stage 1 Recommendations to council

• Site and implement event infrastructure and storage facilities
• Source and implement movable chairs and tables, including
lounge-style chairs
• Pilot a shade structure
• Develop and communicate a plan for recurring events

Area 2  - Streetscape Furnishings Stage 1 Recommendations
• Implement public seating on every block of Virginia Street
• Pilot wayfinding signage with walking distances to districts
and destinations
• Assess opportunities for integration of shade: trees where
not in conflict with underground, other shade
• Assess need for upgrades to event infrastructure
