Buildings to Be Demolished This Weekend on 4th and Virginia

by Mike Van Houten / Mar 5, 2020

There's an upcoming road closure that might affect your downtown driving this weekend. Virginia Street and 4th Street are anticipated to be closed Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, for building demolition at the corner of Virginia and 4th. All the buildings with the exception of the historic St. Francis Hotel/Piazzo building and the Pawn Shop will be demolished.

Here's a fantastic article by Alicia Barber on the St. Francis building which will remain intact.

What: Road Closures
When: Saturday, March 7 at 8 a.m. through Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 5 p.m.
Where: Virginia Street from Plaza to 5th Street; and 4th Street from Sierra to Center Street

Here's a map of the road closures

Virginia Street is anticipated to be opened by Saturday at 5 p.m. However, full closure may be required depending on demolition progress. 4th Street will remain closed throughout the weekend and is anticipated to be opened by Sunday at 5 p.m.

The demolition work is anticipated to be completed over the weekend, but the removal may extend into next week with the goal to have sidewalks open for the 2020 USBC Open Championships, which begin March 21 at the National Bowling Stadium.

The plan is to use the space for event-space throughout the event season in the summer.

No word yet on the plans for the vacant lots after that.
