The City of Reno will release details about a multi-year plan to zero in on the Virginia Lake water quality issue at a public meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. on the first floor of City Hall.
At the meeting, the City will present a water monitoring and sampling plan that will occur this summer and announce the construction phase of the water circulation improvement portion of the project scheduled for this fall. Staff also will provide an update on the progress of a scientific working group that was convened by the City. The group has identified several new water quality improvement options that are currently under consideration.
“The complexity of this issue means that we need to get down to a granular level and truly understand what is causing Virginia Lake’s water quality issues,” says John Flansberg, the City of Reno’s Director of Public Works. “We are not going to see an improvement in water quality this summer, but we are dedicated to doing this project the right way and finding an acceptable long-term solution for the public.”
A text survey was conducted by the City of Reno in 2014 and used to gather feedback about several proposed water quality improvement options. A total of 288 responses were received via the survey, which closed in December 2014. The option to improve circulation in the lake (Option B) and removal of the island with the installation of an improved circulation system (Option D) were the highest-rated options, totaling 88 percent of responses. The survey results are available at Reno.Gov/VirginiaLake.
Any thoughts from anyone who attended? No video or clear public records are posted but I'd really like to learn more about the urban drain water testing, alternative habitat ideas, urban runoff filtration brainstorms, and the overall consensus building activities.
