Grand Sierra Resort’s grand expansion plans go from vapor-project to a reality with a Special Use Permit submitted.

Grand Sierra Resort has submitted a special use permit for the first phase of the massive expansion of their property.

The central pieces of the expansion included in the permit are:
1. A multi-purpose arena floor adaptable for diverse events
2. Community Ice Rink
3. Casino floor expansion set for high-capacity crowds ingress and egress
4. Multi-level parking garage
5. Public Plaza space for community events

Part of Gensler’s master plan, the arena is centrally located with the community ice rink and new aqua golf center, creating an integrated approach to connectivity and vitality. 300 residential units and 800- key hotel are planned along the picturesque lakeside, ready for water shows, waterfront activities and more.

Premium product will include club seats, luxury suites, and club lounges. The primary use of the arena will be as the venue for University of Nevada Reno (Nevada) Men’s Basketball home games as well as live music events. Other sporting events such as hockey, indoor volleyball, and boxing will be accommodated, as will events such as X games and concerts of varying configurations the seating plans for Nevada games will be defined. Additionally, a seating plan for end stage configuration has been included on the general sheets. Additional seating configurations will be included with the issuance of the upcoming design packages.

The arena will be designed to incorporate several uses and amenities that will be active during nongame times. These will include a team store and retail, restaurants and food and beverage outlets. Premium spaces will be designed to not only be used for sporting events and concerts but also to be multifunctional spaces for meetings, conferences, hospitality events and gatherings. An important goal of the project will be to act as a catalyst for the revitalization of Grand Sierra Resort and complement and enhance the existing casino and resort.

The arena will be integrated directly into the existing casino floor at the north end of the Grand Sierra Resort podium so that patrons will have access to the events in a contiguous conditioned environment.

This new expanded casino connector will also house refreshed and new facilities such as a new bar, an approximately 8,000 sq-ft Sports & Entertainment venue, box office and extended casino floor which will double as additional queuing space for both the arena and existing Grand Theatre Event Space. Incorporated into the Event Level of the arena to the north side of the arena will be a Community Ice Rink for the community. This facility will house offices spaces as well as have seating for no more than 500 patrons for viewing for community events and youth hockey programs.
