The Hop - Stepping back to the old days of ice cream and malts
I had the opportunity today to head downtown and meet up with some friends at The Hop, downtown Reno's newest addition and experts in everything ice-cream.
It replaces Coldstone Creamery, who still runs a location at Shopper's Square. I was never a Coldstone fan, heaping cholesterolophic heaps of ice scream mashed in with Diabetes-inducing toppings is not quite my style. Imagine my relief upon walking in The Hop and seeing no marble slab.
The interior is very clean, sleek, not very large but enough seating to accommodate a hot summer day crowd. Lots of shiny chrome and 50's decor like records pinned up on the wall give off a 50's malt shoppe feel. There's no exotic menu here, The Hop offers malt shop favorites including shakes, sundaes, banana splits, waffle bowls, cones, and of course, ice cream in dozens of flavors.
My colleagues shared an ice cream cone while I chomped down on a waffle bowl. The ice cream was delicious, not sure if they make it themselves or if it's a corporate chain, but it's really good. It's not super cheap but it's not overpriced like some other ice cream stores in town. They also sell packaged ice cream in a freezer.

My favorite thing I've tried so far is the Trash Can Malt. Sounds disgusting, but it was yummy I promise. ;)

I tried probably almost all and they are so thick and creamy you can almost bite the ice cream. Yummy pumpkin is available right now.
