First Construction Permit Submitted for 661 Lake Street Project

by Mike Van Houten / Jun 1, 2021

The first construction permit for the 661 Lake Street project downtown has appeared. This project is located between 6th and 7th Streets, and between Center and Lake Streets.

The project, at least from this permit, seems to have been downsized a bit.

I started reporting on this project back in 2019 when the demo permits were submitted for an entire block of homes downtown, to prep for this project.

You can see photos of that phase here

The project then evolved to be 13 stories tall, with a six-story student housing component attached, and a six story parking garage, as proposed when they updated their 1000 Homes In 120 Days application.

This actual construction permit recently submitted however, reads:

COMMERCIAL NEW CONSTRUCTION. NEW CONSTRUCTION OF 4-TIER CAST-IN-PLACE PARKING GARAGE, IN RELATION TO 4 STORY WOOD FRAME APARTMENT THAT WILL BE PERMITTED SEPARATELY.

I don't want to draw any hard conclusions yet, but it seems the project has downszied from being 13 stories and six stories, to being four stories tall, or at least a portion of it four stories tall. It could be the apartments will now wrap around the parking garage much like Reno Experience District's buildings do, rather than the residential units being stacked on top of the garage. Time will tell!
