Keystone Strip Mall To Be Renovated

- It's been three years on this site since I've mentioned the Keystone Avenue Project, and looks like it finally popped out of the woodwork again! I'm referring to the aging strip mall located on the corner of 5th and Keystone Avenue is. Remember the group that was buying up adjoining properties and bull-dozing all the crackhouses along the dead-end portion of 6th Street behind the strip mall? Gone is the plan for a 600-room hotel casino with a tower, etc, replaced by a more realistic plan of renovating the aging 8.8 acre property. If you recall, there was a bit of a standoff with this project, with the Wendy's property refusing to sell. It prevented the developers from having the full block of properties and building something 'big' on the property (like a hotel).

It looks like now, according to the RGJ, Real Estate Affiliates will be moving forward with renovating the aging strip mall this fall. It's the first step to renovating the large 8.8 acre site into something better. While no details were released on what this property actually becomes, including the bulldozed dead-end section of 6th Street, I'm assuming since the strip mall isn't being bulldozed and the hotel isn't being built, that it will eventually be a mix of residential and retail.

It's nice to see this move forward, that strip mall needs all the help it can get.

Hooray, it's about time. I've been passing this empty space for years, hoping for something to go in. One more small step on the way to infill development. Can't wait to see what it will be.
