Residents surrounding Virginia Lake, dog lovers and people who love this park have all joined forces to take matters into their own hands and raise money to substantially improve Virginia Lake's dog park, located on the south side of the lake.
This comes at the same time as the city is working to improve water quality at Virginia Lake and recently held a stakeholder meeting regarding the lake and their plans. The plan was somewhat controversial to bird watchers and bird lovers.
They have already completed fundraising for Phase 1, which I believe is now in the review/permitting process. The fundraising is for Phase 2, which includes:
- a permanent 16' x 16' shade structure in the small dog area
- three benches in the small dog area
- two benches in the large dog area
- a water fountain
- improved landscaping
- dog agility features
They are petitioning the Reno City Council to match funds raised in this effort, dollar for dollar, from the Residential Construction Tax fund. This fund is dedicated to building new infrastructure in parks and can be used for no other purpose.
You can find their fundraising page here where you can donate via Paypal. This is a legit group, and props for the community coming together to improve their own neighborhood.
Also, big props to Silverwing Development, the company behind Virginia Lake Crossing, Glen Manor, the senior apartment complex on the east shore of Virginia Lake, and other developments in town.
