Shamrock Motel Demo

by Mike Van Houten / Jan 12, 2012

Another weekly motel/hotel bites the dust! This one is on the corner of 5th and Center Street. In the photo below you can see there are two motels fenced off together...so maybe the other motel is next? We'll find out soon!

Do they have any plans for the property?

the entire block that old fleabag is/was on is ripe for something new.

Does anyone know if the construction/demolition materials are being recycled/reused at all?

It was a very controlled and prolonged demo. I can't imagine they would do that unless they were recycling the materials.

In response to the question about recycling, a lot of the material from the Shamrock is being recycled. We are currently trying to target a diversion rate in excess of 60%. Nearly all of the metals, steel, aluminum and copper are being recycled. The concrete and concrete masonry units are also being recycled at nearly 100%. Most of the flooring 5/8" plywood for floor sheathing, floor joists and 2X4 studs are being removed and sold. The clean waste wood is being sold as firewood or being ground up. These can be used in a couple of different markets from CO-Generation to mulch. If there is interest I could publish some info when the project is completed. There is a lot of talk out there...n looks like it could be the long awaited TESSERA project in DA DR Downtown Reno with new non gaming hotels and new fine dining and restaurants being built with excellent name brand shopping stores n perhaps some sort of student housing for university students n much more...finally reno is turning the chapter n imploding some of its ugly past.....now they just hav to keep it going n implode the virginian hotel and shut down the cal neva n tear it down...and build mega resorts on the spot and keep imploding all the ugly motels down virginia street and all over reno....hmm could this be a sign of economic recovery? sure think sooo

Thanks for the info Sean! It's great to see projects, especially demo, working to repurpose materials.
